Is the background remover really free?
Yes. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to pay for and no limit on how many images you process.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and your image is processed on your device. It never leaves your computer or phone.
Why does the first run take longer?
On the first use your browser downloads the AI model (about 115 MB, or 225 MB on browsers without WebGPU). It is cached afterwards, so the next images start right away.
Which image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG and WebP. The result is a PNG with a transparent background, or with a solid color if you choose one.
Does it work on my phone?
It works best in a current version of Chrome, Edge or Safari on a desktop or a recent phone. Older or low-memory devices may be too slow; in that case use the server version in ContentMaschine.
Which AI model does it use?
BiRefNet, an open-source segmentation model released under the MIT license. It handles hair, fur and fine edges well.
What if I need more than a cutout?
